Rest in Peace
3AM in the morning the nurse called my mother and said my grandfather was in critical condition. So my parents rushed to the hospital without me and my sister.
I woke up at 11AM and found my mother sleeping in the other room, I made space and lay beside her, asked her how my grandfather was. She said he was okay.
And only a few minutes after she said he was fine, the phone rang again and one of my aunts called to tell us that my grandfather's pulse was beating real slow. So me and my mother took a cab to the hospital. My sister went out early in the morning and my father went for work. We reached the ward and saw Weiying there. Her eyes were red. My mother tried to wake him up but he had no reactions. Then Aunt Jenny came and said that in the morning his ex-girlfriend came to visit him, he grabbed her hand and cried. Why is it that we called him so many times but he seldom respond to us? Oh wells. I tried to use the stethoscope to listen to his heart beat but apparently I couldn't find it, or it was too faint to be heard. His hands were cold and clammy, he was breathing very slowly as well. Then soon all the relatives came, and we crowded around him. We tried to make him respond but he didn't. My mother cried, and I followed, again. Then some while later my grandfather stopped breathing.
Okay, we called for the nurse and they attempted to do the what you call it thing, the two metal pieces which electrocute you. But I think they didn't, he was too weak. We peeped in the drawn curtains, I saw the nurse take off his oxygen mask and stop this thing, I suppose the oxygen supplier. Then she came out and said he only had five minutes left and went back in. We were waiting for her to withdraw the curtains so we could go in and have a last look at my grandfather but a doctor came out and said he was dead. I didn't even know there was a doctor in there. So my grandfather is gone. I heard Weiying say it was a kind of relief. Everyone broke down and cried a river.
He lay there in bed, with his mouth open. Uncle Ernie tried to close it but it wouldn't. I couldn't believe it, someone in my life just passed away like that. The nurses came to clean his body, and again we peeped in the curtains. He was so skinny, his ribs were distinctive. My grandfather was really plump in the past. Cancer, how frightening.
We went to his house, the adults did the preparations for the wake. The cousins had McDonalds for breakfast/ lunch. I was feeling very oily 'cause I haven't bathed since I woke up. Then Aunt Jenny came up and said that my grandfather's embalmed body was already downstairs in the coffin. We went down and looked at him. He seemed so different, he had real thick foundation and was in a suit. But he looked smart. His mouth were closed, I saw glue between his lips. Emily cried, then Weihui, and Weiyi. I couldn't control, I continued the chain effect. The wake will end on Thursday, when his body will be cremated.
Went home after that, I'm not going to school on Thursday. It's a long day so I think I'll be missing out a lot. Maybe part of our Christmas Fund should be given to some cancer foundation.
How I wish I had more time with my grandfather, all I can say that we weren't very close. If everything could just rewind.
Grandpa, rest in peace. We love you.
Let's be glad that he lived four months after he was diagnosed with colon cancer.
Let's treasure one another.
